Sunday, 2/28/10 - Blue

I go very few places without my camera.
People often ask what I am photographing.

They sometimes look a little deflated
when I respond "Everything!"
Maybe because they think that I am
not interested in conversation.

But it is true,
between my professional jobs
and my personal shots
I DO photograph everything!

The sun came out briefly and
as I walked with a friend
we passed this bottle.
As is typical with me,
I was several steps beyond it
before my brain had processed
what my eyes had sent it.

When I walked back,
took the lens cap off the camera,
fidgeted with the settings,
focused,
and took the shot
my friend asked me why I was taking
a picture of a broken bottle.

I could not explain
how I saw that bottle
and how interesting it appeared.

Saturday, 2/27/10 - Three Palms

There are so many images that I would like to share.
Some days, like today, I will put up a few that
have a common theme.

In this one
it is hard to tell the palm
from its reflection.

This one was discovered
just off of a parking lot
on one of my lunchtime excursions.

Another lunchtime discovery.
Sometimes, the shadow
is as interesting
as the object.

Friday, 2/26/10 - Bee

It was cold, windy,
and just beginning to rain
as I waited in the parking lot
at the beach
for a group of 17 portrait clients
that never showed up.

As I waited,
I watched this bee
sitting on the windshield
of a luxury car.

I watched the bee.
I watched the cars driving by.
I watched the wind blowing the palm trees
and discarded papers.
I watched as the wind gathered moved little eddies of sand
like waves across the parking lot.

I looked all around me:
at the beach, at the misty rain, and at the grey, cold sky.
I looked at the luxury car.
I looked at my car.
I looked at the camera in my hands.

I looked at all that was around me
and
I rejoiced
at how lucky
I really am.

Wednesday, 2/24 - The Face

Do you see the same face that I see?

Tuesday, 2/23/10 - No Wonder...

Walking down the street
I noticed this vehicle.

It wasn't in the best shape.
There were dents and scratches
and pieces missing.

One light was hanging out
like the limp tongue
of some dead creature.

Passing alongside it,
I saw the following sign
in the window.

Duh!

NOTE: I did consider changing the phone number but someone reading this might need a job... and be a better driver.

and that springtime
and sunshine
have finally returned.

Friday, 2/19/10 - Feel This

Bounding,
Dancing,
Gamboling,
Skipping,
Hopping,
Prancing,

What ever word would best describe it,
there were obvious signs
about how it makes me feel
to be outside,
in the sunshine,
with a camera...

Sunday, 2/14/10 - A Little Sunshine

It is always possible,
To find a little sunshine,
On a cloudy day.

Jut look,
My way.

Saturday, February 13, 2010

Saturday, 2/13/10 - The Bridge

Nearing nightfall,
Driving from town to the beach,
Rain ahead and rain behind.

A momentary break in the clouds,
A convenient pull out,
And the camera, always at the ready,
Allowed the one shot,
That produced this image.

Friday, 2/12/10 - Free Flight

Over the treetops.
Flying free.

Thursday, 2/11/10 - Sushi

Look a little stressed?

Well, I don't blame him. The glass front of his home overlooks the counter at a popular sushi bar.

I was told that I would never be able to get this shot and that all I would end up with was blurry reflections.

Our table was 20 feet from the tank and even with an 800 ISO and the widest aperture, the shutter speed was very slow (1/15). I used the table to help steady the shot.

I believe that a polarizer would have helped but the one I have is 77mm and the lens that was on the camera was 72mm... Since I have several 77mm filters, I have ordered an adapter that will step the 77mm down to 72mm (beats buying a whole new set of filters). Once it arrives, I will try this shot again.

And that, my friends, is a very long rationalization for eating more sushi.

Wednesday, 2/10/10 - A Break In The Clouds

After much grey,
And much rain,
The sun,
Finally,
Found a space,
To shine through.

Tuesday, 2/9/10 - A question answered

I was asked a question.
Here is my response:

There is a freedom
and a creativity
in longer exposure
that is just not possible
with point-and-shoot.

The quick click can be fun
and may even produce something nice
but consistency
and predictably
are best achieved
with one body
that you become so familiar with
that it becomes an extension of yourself.
Instinctively you can
bring into being
all that your mind
can envision.

The question
was not about
photography.

Monday, 2/8/10 - Pipe

In this image,
the shadow defines the pipe
and gives it depth.

Sunday, February 7, 2010

Sunday, 2/7/10 - A Sunlit Steeple

A momentary break in the clouds.
A steeple illuminated,
Against an ominous sky.

Saturday, 2/6/10 - Forgotten

Frost,
Forgotten.

Filed,
Found.

This image is from this time last year.
I guess that it was cold then, too.

Friday, 2/5/10 - Happy

Dark, wintery and cold is not typical.
For neither the weather nor my disposition.
Sunshine and happiness are everywhere...

Thursday, February 4, 2010

Thursday, 2/4/10 - Cold

More cold,
with rain in the forecast.

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Wednesday, 2/3/10 - Mood for a Day

Another cold morning.
People are turtled in their overcoats, heads pulled back into raised collars.
Birds gather on wires seeking the warmth of manmade light.
Will the sun never shine again?

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Tuesday, 2/2/10 - Morning

Long exposure, low light images
in the morning and in the evening
are some of my favorites.

The camera records light differently from how we perceive it.

Results are sometimes unexpected.
