Sunday, 1/31/10 - 30 Seconds

Early morning.

The sky is beginning to lighten.

Sunrise is still a half-hour away.

The air is cold and still.

It will take 30 seconds for the camera, sitting atop a tripod, to capture this scene.

With my shoulders hunched up around my ears and my hands thrust down deep inside my jacket pockets I imagine sitting comfortably in the home across the river enjoying a steaming cup of coffee as I watch some fool set up a camera and tripod in the early morning chill.

Saturday, 1/30/10 - Haven

I won't often feature "portraits" but Haven was just too cute...

Friday, 1/29/10 - Slow Light

Capturing light is one thing, capturing dark is another. Subtle tonal changes in this image add interest and require us to slow down from our normal speed-of-light pace to be able to discover some simple secrets.

Thursday, 1/28/10 - Lines

People have commented that many of my personal images are of things they pass every day.

My hope is to train myself to see the beauty in the everyday, in the ordinary, and in the commonplace.

Everyday at lunchtime I take my camera, leave the office and walk a couple of blocks. I photograph whatever catches my eye. Sometimes I am several steps past something before my brain gets around to deciding that it is of interest.

Since I am limited in how far I can go, I tend to pass the same things every day but every day I continue to find something new and different and beautiful.

Wednesday, 1/27/10 - Perspective

This blog is all about perspective and how things are viewed.

What makes something interesting or beautiful? What captures our attention? Is a sweeping view of a scene more revealing than isolating one element? Is it the contrasts or the similarities that are more appealing?

Tuesday, 1/26/10 - Fire

Orange leaves and a golden sunset add some fire to this scene.

Sunday, 1/24/2010 - Comfort and Contentment

Most of the images on this site will have been captured within a week of the post. There are, however, some older images that I would like to share.

This is one of my favorites.

Arriving at a friend's for dinner, I noticed this sleepy critter tucked comfortably within the folds of a thai plant beside the driveway.

What you aren't seeing in this image is the six hands that are holding the plant and spreading the leaves so that we can get an unobstructed view.

Even with all of our commotion, the frog never stirred.

Saturday, 1/23/2010 - Welcome

I will start this blog with a picture of hope.

It has been a hard winter here in Florida. It lasted two weeks. This is about 14 times longer than our typical winter.

Much of the vegetation was affected.

In this image, the way the tall stalk is pushing upward is, to me, reminiscent of the inspiration in the Iwo Jima Memorial.

Welcome.
